Here at Cool Brisbane we’re pretty keen on green jobs. For a start, we’ve all got green jobs! Not only that, but we reckon that the we need more cool people in green jobs to address the problems of climate change, biodiversity loss and declining freshwater supplies.

But what is a green job? The ACF describes ‘green jobs’ or ‘green collar jobs’ as jobs that “contribute to better environmental outcomes or increased sustainability”.  The exciting part about these jobs is that not only are these jobs better for the planet, but this particular job sector is set for a serious boom and is one of a small number of sectors that are considered to be ‘recession proof’, meaning that if our economy takes a serious hit, the green job sector will continue to grow.

The problem is, however, that even though this sector is growing, it looks like we won’t have enough skilled people to actually do the job that we need doing to move to a sustainable future. In short, the planet needs more green workers to get the job done!

So what sort of jobs are we talking about here? Well, we’ve found a few cool green jobs to get you started, and we’ve found some other sites that feature profiles on other cool green jobs. What you’ll notice is that not all green jobs are about the physical sciences. Sure it pays to have a bit of an understanding about some of the natural processes that are common or important to environmental problems, but you may not need a strong background in that area.

Are you, for example, great with people? Lots of green jobs are about communication and education.

Or there are green marketing jobs, jobs in environmental law, jobs in the government working on policy, green urban planning jobs, and even campaigning and lobbying jobs.

Of course if you love your science there are also plenty of jobs: environmental scientists, chemists, biologists, ecologists and engineers, just to name a few.

Or you may be a clever techie and a whiz with machines or computers: there are oodles of opportunities in the renewable energy sector for people like you.
